Most structural, plumbing and drainage building work in New Zealand needs a building consent from your local council before it starts. A consent confirms your plans meet the Building Code.

Schedule 1 of the Building Act lists low-risk building work you can do without a consent — but the work must still meet the Building Code and other laws.

The Building Code is the performance standard all building work in New Zealand must meet — covering structure, weathertightness, fire safety, durability, energy efficiency and more.

A Code Compliance Certificate is the council’s formal confirmation that consented building work was completed in line with the building consent. It is the final sign-off for your project.
