Hiring a painter is one of those jobs where the cheapest quote is not always the best value. 2) What prep work will be done before painting starts?

3) Which paint products and system will you use?
The best painter should recommend products based on the surface, location, and durability needed, not just whatever is cheapest or easiest for them to buy. In NZ, UV resistance, moisture resistance, and salt exposure can all influence product choice.

4) How long will the job take, and who will be on site?
Timing matters, especially if you are living in the house during the work or trying to coordinate around weather. Exterior work in particular can be delayed by rain, wind, humidity, or temperature, so you want a realistic schedule rather than an optimistic guess.

A good painter should give you a start window, expected duration, and a breakdown of how many people will be on the job. They should also explain what happens if weather causes delays.
Ask:
• When can you start?
• How long will the job take in normal conditions?
• How many painters will be on site?
• Will you be doing the work personally or using subcontractors?
• What happens if rain or damp weather delays the exterior work?
If the painter promises a very fast turnaround without asking about prep or access, be cautious. A rushed job often means shortcuts.
5) Are you insured, qualified, and covered by a workmanship guarantee?
This question helps you separate a professional from a casual operator. While painting does not always require a formal trade licence in NZ, a serious painter should still have the right insurance, GST registration if applicable, and a clear warranty on workmanship.

They should be able to show evidence of public liability insurance and explain what their workmanship guarantee covers and for how long. If they are a company, they should also provide business details and a written quote.

6) How will you handle changes, cleanup, and payment?

• Will you remove masking, debris, and rubbish when finished?
A reasonable deposit may be requested, but be wary of anyone demanding most of the money upfront.
Red flags that should make you pause
Some warning signs are easy to miss if you are focused on price alone. A good painter may be busy, but they should still be organised and transparent.
Watch out for:
• No written quote
• No clear breakdown of prep and materials
• Refusal to provide insurance details
• Pressure to decide immediately
• Prices that are much lower than similar quotes
• Vague answers about products, timing, or warranty
If a painter avoids specifics, that is usually a sign they may also avoid accountability later.
Final checklist before you hire
Before you commit, compare at least two or three quotes using the same questions. The best painter is usually the one who gives clear answers, writes everything down, and shows they understand both the job and your home’s conditions.
A strong final decision should leave you confident about:

• What happens if problems arise
