How to Fix a Kitchen Drawer That Has Come Off Its Runners

A drawer off its runners is usually a quick DIY fix. Learn how to reattach it, adjust the slides, and prevent it happening again.

How to Fix a Kitchen Drawer That Has Come Off Its Runners

A kitchen drawer that has jumped off its runners is one of those frustrating but usually straightforward fixes you can tackle yourself in under an hour. The approach depends on the type of runner system your drawer uses, but the basic process — remove, inspect, realign, reattach — is the same across most systems.

Identify Your Runner Type First

Before you start, work out what kind of slides your drawer uses. The three most common types in NZ kitchens are:

  • Roller/side runners – simple plastic or metal tracks with a small wheel at the front of the drawer. Common in older and budget kitchens.
  • Ball-bearing side slides – metal tracks with a ball-bearing mechanism that allow smooth, full-extension opening. Very common in modern flat-pack and custom cabinetry.
  • Undermount slides – hidden beneath the drawer, clipped to the base. Often found in higher-end kitchens and some flat-pack ranges from stores like Bunnings or Mitre 10.

Knowing your runner type tells you exactly how to reattach and adjust the drawer.

What You'll Need

  • Phillips head and flat-head screwdrivers
  • A cordless drill/driver (optional but handy)
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Replacement screws if originals are stripped (M4 or similar — check your existing screws)
  • Lubricant: a dry silicone spray or a candle/wax rubbed along the track works well
  • A torch or phone light to see inside the cabinet

Step-by-Step: Reattaching the Drawer

1. Fully Remove the Drawer

Pull the drawer out as far as it will go. On ball-bearing slides, look for a small plastic lever or tab on each side of the slide — press or lift these simultaneously to release the drawer from the cabinet-mounted tracks. On roller runners, simply lift the front of the drawer up and out at an angle. For undermount slides, there is usually a clip or lever at the back underside of the drawer to release.

2. Inspect the Runners and Drawer

With the drawer out, check both the cabinet-mounted tracks and the drawer-mounted tracks for:

  • Bent or broken components — a bent metal track can often be carefully straightened with pliers; a cracked plastic roller usually needs replacing.
  • Loose screws — this is the most common cause of a drawer coming off. Tighten any loose screws. If the screw holes are stripped, fill them with a wooden toothpick and a dab of PVA glue, let it dry, then re-drive the screw.
  • Debris or build-up — food crumbs and grease can jam rollers. Wipe the tracks clean with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

3. Check the Cabinet Tracks Are Level

Use a tape measure to confirm both cabinet-mounted tracks are at the same height from the cabinet floor and the same distance from the front of the cabinet. Even a few millimetres of difference will cause the drawer to bind or derail. Most ball-bearing slides have adjustment screws (usually a small Phillips screw in a slotted hole) that let you move the track up, down, forward or back without removing it entirely.

4. Reattach the Drawer

  • Ball-bearing slides: Extend the inner slide (drawer-mounted section) fully. Angle the drawer slightly, hook the inner slides onto the outer tracks at the back, then lower the front until you hear or feel a click as the levers engage.
  • Roller runners: Angle the drawer so the rear wheels sit in the back of the tracks first, then lower the front wheels into the front of the tracks.
  • Undermount slides: Slide the drawer in until the rear clips engage, then press down at the front to lock.

Open and close the drawer several times. It should glide smoothly without lifting, dropping or catching.

5. Lubricate the Runners

Once everything is aligned, apply a dry silicone spray or rub a white candle along the tracks. Avoid oil-based lubricants — they attract dust and grime over time, which can cause the same problem to recur.

Replacing Worn or Broken Runners

If the runners are beyond adjustment or repair, replacement slides are widely available at Bunnings, Mitre 10, and PlaceMakers. When buying replacements, measure the internal depth of your cabinet (not the drawer) — slides are sized by length, typically in 250 mm, 300 mm, 350 mm, 400 mm, 450 mm, and 500 mm increments. Also note the weight rating if you have a heavy drawer (pots and pans, for example).

As a broad guide, basic roller runner sets start from around $10–$20 a pair, while quality ball-bearing full-extension slides can range from $20–$60+ a pair depending on length and load rating.

Preventing the Problem in Future

  • Don't overload drawers beyond their rated capacity.
  • Check and tighten runner screws every year or two as part of general home maintenance.
  • Lubricate slides annually.
  • If children are pulling drawers out forcefully, consider adding soft-close mechanisms — these are available as add-ons for many slide types and reduce the impact on the hardware.

When to Call a Professional

This is a job most homeowners can handle confidently. However, if your kitchen cabinetry is custom-built or high-end joinery with proprietary undermount hardware (such as Blum Tandem or Hettich systems), getting the adjustment right can be fiddly. A qualified handyman or kitchen joiner will have the right tools and know-how to sort it quickly. If the cabinet carcass itself is damaged — swollen from moisture, cracked, or out of square — that's also worth having a professional assess, as it may point to a moisture or weathertightness issue worth investigating further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my kitchen drawer keep coming off its runners?+

The most common causes are loose screws on the cabinet or drawer tracks, worn or broken rollers, misaligned slides, or overloading the drawer. Check all screws are tight and that both tracks are at the same height. Regular lubrication also helps prevent derailing.

How do I know what size replacement runners to buy?+

Measure the internal depth of your cabinet (not the drawer itself) from the back wall to the inside of the cabinet face. Drawer slides are sold in standard lengths — 300 mm, 350 mm, 400 mm, 450 mm, and 500 mm are the most common. Choose the size that fits within your cabinet depth without overhanging.

Can I replace roller runners with ball-bearing slides?+

Yes, in most cases you can upgrade from basic roller runners to ball-bearing slides as long as the cabinet dimensions suit the new hardware. You may need to reposition the mounting holes slightly. Check the product specifications before buying to confirm compatibility with your cabinet width and drawer dimensions.

What is the best lubricant for drawer runners?+

A dry silicone spray is ideal for most metal and plastic runners as it doesn't attract dust or grime. Rubbing a white candle or a block of paraffin wax along the tracks is a traditional and effective alternative. Avoid WD-40 or oil-based products on drawer slides as they can attract debris over time.

Do I need a building consent to repair or replace kitchen drawer runners?+

No — repairing or replacing drawer runners is routine maintenance and does not require a building consent. It is not restricted work under the Building Act. However, if you are doing a larger kitchen renovation involving structural changes, plumbing, or electrical work, check with your local council about consent requirements. See MBIE Building Performance at https://www.building.govt.nz for guidance.
